Discover Regina: A Closer Look at the Cathedral Neighbourhood

by Heather Markus

If there is one Regina neighbourhood that truly has a personality all its own, Cathedral is it.

Located just west of downtown, Cathedral Village is known for its beautiful character homes, mature tree-lined streets, thriving arts community and an eclectic collection of locally owned shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries.

At the heart of it all is 13th Avenue — one of Regina's most recognizable neighbourhood shopping districts and a place where you can easily spend an afternoon wandering, shopping, stopping for coffee and discovering something new.

For buyers who want something a little different from newer suburban neighbourhoods, Cathedral offers a lifestyle and atmosphere that can be hard to duplicate elsewhere in the city.

🏡 Character Homes with History

One of the first things you'll notice when driving or walking through Cathedral is the architecture.

Cathedral is one of Regina's older neighbourhoods, with development dating back to the city's pre-First World War growth. Many of its homes were built in the early decades of the 1900s, giving the neighbourhood a wonderful collection of character properties.

You'll find charming bungalows, two-storey homes and other early 20th-century architectural styles throughout the area. Many have features you simply don't see as often in newer construction — mature yards, front porches, original woodwork, unique floor plans and plenty of individual character.

Some homes have been beautifully restored or extensively renovated, while others still offer opportunities for buyers who love the idea of making an older home their own.

That's part of Cathedral's appeal: the houses don't all look the same.

🎨 Regina's Creative Side

Cathedral has long been associated with Regina's arts and creative community, and that influence can be seen throughout the neighbourhood.

Artists, musicians, craftspeople and independently owned businesses all contribute to an atmosphere that feels a little more colourful, creative and unconventional than many other areas of the city.

The Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre and Art Gallery of Regina, located near Les Sherman Park, provide opportunities to experience and participate in the visual arts.

You'll also find independent galleries such as Slate Fine Art Gallery, along with shops and businesses throughout the area that add to Cathedral's creative personality.

But the biggest celebration of Cathedral's artistic spirit happens each spring.

🎭 The Cathedral Village Arts Festival

The Cathedral Village Arts Festival has become one of Regina's signature community events.

For an entire week, the neighbourhood celebrates music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literature and performance. The festival culminates with the popular 13th Avenue Street Fair, when a large section of 13th Avenue closes to vehicle traffic and fills with artisans, vendors, performers, food and thousands of visitors.

In 2026, the festival ran May 18–23, with the Street Fair stretching along 13th Avenue between Albert and Elphinstone Streets.

It's a great example of what makes Cathedral special — this isn't simply a neighbourhood where people live. It's a community that actively celebrates its identity.

🌳 Parks & Outdoor Space

Cathedral's mature trees and older streets already give the area plenty of character, but residents also have access to some wonderful green spaces.

Les Sherman Park is one of the highlights. Located along Wascana Creek, it's a beautiful place for walking, cycling, spending time outdoors or simply enjoying some green space close to home.

The park is also home to the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre and Art Gallery of Regina, bringing Cathedral's outdoor and artistic sides together in one location.

Its location along Regina's pathway system also gives residents another way to explore the city beyond the neighbourhood itself.

🎒 Connaught Community School

Connaught Community School is an important part of the Cathedral community.

The school's history in the neighbourhood dates back more than a century. The original Connaught School was constructed during Cathedral's early development, although today's school building is much newer.

Having a community school within a walkable established neighbourhood is another feature that can be attractive to families considering Cathedral.

As always, families purchasing a home should confirm current school boundaries and programming directly with Regina Public Schools.

⛪ Landmarks That Help Define Cathedral

It's impossible to talk about Cathedral without mentioning Holy Rosary Cathedral.

Located on 13th Avenue, the impressive cathedral dates to the early 1900s and ultimately helped give the neighbourhood the name we know today. Its twin spires and beautiful architecture make it one of the area's most recognizable landmarks.

Nearby, Westminster United Church is another longstanding part of the streetscape and history of the community.

Together with the character homes surrounding them, these buildings give Cathedral a sense of history that's very different from Regina's newer neighbourhoods.

☕ 13th Avenue & Local Businesses

This may be my favourite part of Cathedral.

Rather than being centred around large shopping centres, Cathedral has an incredible collection of independent businesses, restaurants, cafés and specialty shops — many clustered along or near 13th Avenue.

You could grab a classic diner meal at The Mercury Cafe & Grill, stop for a treat at Elle's Cafe & Ice Cream, enjoy Japanese and Korean-inspired dishes at Orange Izakaya, browse local art at Slate Fine Art Gallery, or pick up something for dinner from longtime neighbourhood businesses such as Pacific Fresh Fish.

And that's only scratching the surface.

You'll find everything from specialty shops and cafés to restaurants, art, services and some wonderfully unusual little stores that you might never encounter in a conventional shopping centre.

Places such as Dessart Sweets, along with the many other independent businesses scattered throughout the neighbourhood, help make a walk down 13th Avenue feel like an experience rather than simply a shopping trip.

Nearby restaurants and gathering places add even more options, including Blanco Cantina on Albert Street.

It's this mix of old and new, practical and quirky, that gives Cathedral so much of its personality.

🚶 A Neighbourhood Made for Exploring

One of Cathedral's biggest lifestyle advantages is its walkability.

The Cathedral Area Community Association describes 13th Avenue as the hub of neighbourhood activity, and it's easy to understand why.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to walk from home to grab a coffee, pick up groceries, browse a shop, meet someone for lunch, visit a gallery or simply take a stroll beneath the mature trees.

Cathedral also sits very close to downtown Regina, giving residents relatively easy access to the city centre while still offering the feeling of a distinct residential community.

❤️ Who Might Love Living in Cathedral?

Cathedral may be especially appealing to someone who values:

  • Character and historic homes
  • Mature trees and established streets
  • Arts and culture
  • Independent local businesses
  • Cafés and restaurants within the neighbourhood
  • Walkability
  • Parks and pathways
  • Being close to downtown
  • A strong sense of community
  • A neighbourhood where homes, businesses and streets have their own personality

Cathedral isn't about perfectly uniform houses or brand-new development — and that's exactly what many people love about it.

📍 Discover Cathedral for Yourself

Cathedral is one of those Regina neighbourhoods that really needs to be experienced rather than simply described.

Take a walk down 13th Avenue. Explore some of the side streets. Look at the architecture. Stop for lunch or coffee. Browse a local shop or gallery. Spend some time in Les Sherman Park.

You'll quickly understand why Cathedral has developed such a distinctive identity within Regina.

And if you're considering buying or selling a home in Cathedral, I'd be happy to help you explore the neighbourhood and the unique real estate you'll find here.
